The Dagbong Kingdom warmly welcomes all guests, dignitaries, and travelers who wish to experience the rich culture, history, and royal traditions of our people. These guidelines are provided to help you enjoy your visit and engage respectfully with the customs of our Kingdom under the stewardship of His Royal Highness Chief Sofwan Alhassan, the Chief-in-Charge of Guests.
Visitors are encouraged to observe all traditional courtesies when entering the Gbewaa Palace or meeting members of the royal household. When greeting the Yaa-Naa or any senior chief, a respectful bow or the traditional greeting (Naa ti yira or Dasiba) is appropriate. Please allow the chief to initiate a handshake.
Modesty is an expression of respect in Dagbong culture.
Men: Traditional smock (batakari) or formal wear.
Women: Traditional cloth or modest long dresses.
Visitors are asked to remove hats and sunglasses when in the presence of the chief, unless required for medical reasons.
Photography within the palace or during royal ceremonies is strictly regulated. Visitors must obtain permission from palace officials or the Office of His Royal Highness Chief Sofwan Alhassan before taking photos or recording video. Unauthorized media activity within royal grounds is not permitted.
Presenting a token of respect is an honored tradition when meeting the Yaa-Naa or senior chiefs. Gifts such as kola nuts, drinks, or symbolic items of goodwill are appreciated. All offerings should be presented through the Palace Protocol Officer or directly via the Chief of Hospitality’s office.
Visitors should speak calmly and respectfully, avoiding interruptions during formal conversations. Always allow the linguist (okyeame) to speak on your behalf when addressing the chief. This custom preserves respect and order during royal proceedings.
All visits to the royal palace and other historic sites are by appointment only.
Appointments must be arranged through the Office of His Royal Highness Chief Sofwan Alhassan, who oversees guest reception and coordination. Visitors are kindly asked to arrive punctually and adhere to the approved visiting schedule.
